From Mic to the Masses - Why I started Great Vibrations Radio

Hi, I’m Esme Strydom — founder of Great Vibrations Radio, and if you’ve landed here, thank you. You’re not just visiting a station’s blog — you’re stepping into a dream that’s been years in the making.

A Lifelong Love Affair With Music
From a very young age, I was drawn to music, microphones, and the magic of connecting with people. Whether I was singing, speaking, or performing, I just knew I belonged on a stage. I always dreamed of being in entertainment — of making people feel something through sound.

That passion stayed with me through everything. Life took me on many paths, but the dream never left. And in 2021, I took a leap and became a presenter at a local online radio station. The moment I sat behind the mic, something shifted in me. I felt completely at home — like I’d found my calling.

I knew then that one day I’d start my own station. And in 2025, that dream came true.

The Road Before Radio
Before launching Great Vibrations, I spent more than 30 years working in a corporate environment — in fact, I ran my own branch (successfully I might add) in Cape Town for a company called SMD and was there for 17 years. I was used to high-pressure environments, big responsibilities, and pushing hard to meet goals. I learned a lot and achieved a lot. But deep down, my heart beat to a very different rhythm.

Behind the suits and spreadsheets, there was still a woman who wanted to sing, to speak, and to inspire.

I’m also a single mom to my beautiful daughter, Jordan, who is, without a doubt, my greatest achievement. Raising her taught me the kind of strength, love, and determination that no job ever could. She's been my biggest motivator to keep going — even when things felt impossible.

So why did I start Great Vibrations? Because I wanted to create more than just a radio station. I wanted to create a platform — a vibe, a voice, a space where people feel uplifted, heard, and inspired. I wanted to give small businesses a real shot at being seen and remembered without having to spend a fortune.

But Great Vibrations isn’t only about ads. It’s about energy — the kind that lifts people up.

Running this station solo hasn’t been without challenges. I’m currently the only voice on air, but that’s by design — for now. My ultimate vision is to build a fully female-presented station where strong, soulful voices lead the way. I want Great Vibrations to become a household name — not just for the music, but for the energy, community, and connection it brings. But starting this station wasn't without help, my amazing partner Adriaan has been at my every beck and call - designing my website, setting up my (for now) home studio and doing so much more. I truly am greatful to have him in my life - and the fact that he has stuck by me through all my moods (LOL) is in itself a miracle. He just wants to see me succeed as so many other people do too (I am so thankful for people that believe in me).

We are starting small and growing strong. One day, I envision a full team of female presenters, each bringing her unique voice and story to the airwaves. A station where women feel empowered and heard — and where listeners always feel good. More than anything, I want to show other women — especially those starting over or chasing a dream later in life — that it’s never too late.
